The Smart Label Demo showcases an end-to-end cold chain management solution. It combines a high accuracy temperature sensor with a microcontroller mounted on a flexible substrate containing a printed battery. The label uses cloud services to provide logical analysis of the temperature readings. It is the culmination of four different companies, each experts in their own respective domains. They joined forces to create a mass production-ready, turn-key solution for the Internet of Things (IoT) market.
The collective solution combines sensor and RFID technology to address the challenge of various industries with a specific interest in cold chain management. The solution comprises a low-cost pocket-sized smart sensor that tracks and stores precise temperature readings. Analytics and remediation is available via a cloud solution, employing the label’s built-in NFC capabilities.
While NXP developed the single-chip solution and Enfucell tailored the printable batteries, Identiv created the RFID inlay design ready for mass-production and Syntel delivered both the mobile APP and cloud services. The Smart Label's small form-factor and innovative design empowers organizations to enable temperature logging at an item level and not just at the pallet or package level. Our solution demonstrates quality control over the whole logistic chain, and provides vital information to both manufacturers and end-users.
Manufacturers now have a means to learn about the storage conditions of their goods, starting from the boxing of their goods until the consumption by the end-user. Additionally, the end-user now has a safe and unobtrusive way to verify the quality of the product.
When cold chain incidents occur, our solution allows identification of exactly when the incident occurred. The effects of these incidents and their extent can be calculated and communicated to both manufacturer and end-user via chip or cloud: the entire history of temperature logs for a particular label can be viewed on both a mobile app and the analytics dashboard. Apart from validity, authentication checks can be enabled and extra logistic information, like expiration dates, can be included.
The smart label is equipped with a thin battery to record temperature measurements, providing 0.3°C (0.5°F) absolute temperature accuracy, flexible temperature boundaries, freely adjustable logging intervals, multiple ways for storage, and post-mortem analysis. It overcomes the uncertainties and limitations of pallet-level monitoring and enables full remediation and customizable access to all logged information.

The Smart Label Demo solution can track temperature-sensitive goods that have a fairly short shelf life, including a variety of perishable goods. Distribution of these goods are subject to strict monitoring in order to guarantee product freshness and quality from the production site to the end user.
For one particular use case, the solution has been introduced in the food industry to track fish freshness during transportation time from supplier to consumer. Now, a truck driver could read the data upon dropping off or picking up a product shipment at a distribution center.
More and more medicines are biologically engineered and require a temperature-controlled supply chain to ensure their efficacy is retained.
